Before we get to the events of the night, let’s take a moment to recognize Dave Mass Racing for their incredible stats recently posted about his career at Ogilvie Raceway! Way To Go, Dave!
Ogilvie opened in 2009, he is the only driver who has won at least one feature every season at Ogilvie. Mass has 91 feature wins at the Big ‘O’, 83 Super Stock, 5 Modified, 2 Street Stock, and 1 Midwest Modified.
This weekend, the fun continued!
On Friday night
In the Late Models Dave started in the back of the field in 8th place in the heat race. On lap one, one of the cars in front of him spun out going into the first corner and ended up collecting Dave and putting him in the wall, taking him out for the rest of the qualifying heat race. This meant that Dave now had to go through the B Feature (last chance race) in order to qualify to get into the main event in the Late Model class.
In the Super Stock Dave started in 7th place and would race himself up into 2nd place by midway through the race. By the time Dave got into 2nd, the leader was one whole straightaway ahead of him. Dave would gain ground on him every lap for the rest of the race and would end up catching him to pass him for the lead with one lap to go, and would go on to win the Super Stock heat race.
On Saturday night
In the Late Model, Dave started 11th in the B feature and would need to finish in the top 8 in order to qualify to get into the main event. And David do just that. The #2 finished the race in 8th place, just enough to get him into the big show. He would end up starting 22nd in the main event in the Late Models. He would gain some ground, getting up to 16th before having some equipment troubles and having to pull off into the infield and would not finish the Late Model feature race
In the super Stock Class Dave would start in 1st place on the front row because of his win the night before from the back of the field. When the green flag dropped Dave would fall back into 2nd place as the first-place car began to pull away and open up a big lead over Dave. Over the course of the 30 lap race Dave strategically ran some different lines on the track trying to regain some if the ground he lost early on, and was able to overcome the tough track conditions and eventually track down the first place car. With about 8 laps to go Dave would pass him for the lead and go on to win the Fall Nationals Championship race. This would be Dave’s second consecutive Fall National Championship and his 6th career Championship at the Fall Nationals.
