Behind the Scenes: Drafting with Alexa

At Structural Buildings, every project is an opportunity to showcase our team’s craftsmanship and creativity. One recent project that stands out is the Bakke Cabin, a post-frame cabin that presented both challenges and learning experiences. Alexa Ranfranz, one of our talented drafters, took the lead on this project, marking her first turn-key design. Her journey through this process offers insight into what it takes to bring a client’s vision to life.

When Alexa first received the layout for the Bakke Cabin, she was eager to take on the challenge. As her first turn-key project, it represented a significant milestone in her career as a drafter. “I was excited to get to work on such a large project,” Alexa said, reflecting on her initial impressions. The client’s proposed layout was intriguing, providing a solid foundation while also leaving room for Alexa to inject her creativity.

One of the most crucial aspects of any design project is collaboration, and the Bakke Cabin was no exception. Alexa worked closely with Mark, the salesman responsible for the project. This collaboration ensured that every aspect of the design aligned with the client’s needs and expectations. Alexa emphasized, “I wanted to make sure that the design was going to fit the needs of the client.” By maintaining open lines of communication, Alexa ensured that the project stayed on track and met the client’s vision.

The Bakke Cabin project started with a proposed floor plan provided by the client. They had specific requests: a spacious, vaulted area, an open layout for the great room, and plenty of natural light. Alexa took these ideas and fine-tuned them, ensuring that the design not only matched but enhanced the client’s vision. This process required balancing the original layout with the necessary adjustments, a task Alexa handled with precision and care.

Every project comes with its set of challenges, and for Alexa, one of the main hurdles was expanding the utility room. To achieve the desired size, she had to adjust the entry hall area, ensuring the design remained functional and aesthetically pleasing. Another challenge was determining the best layout for the floor trusses, a critical component in post-frame construction. By working closely with both Mark and Mitch, the head of the drafting department, Alexa was able to navigate these complexities and find effective solutions.

The Bakke Cabin project was more than just another design task; it was a valuable learning experience for Alexa. “As this was my first turn-key project, I learned a ton about a variety of things,” she noted. One of the key areas she delved deeper into was the use of floor trusses and thickened interior bearings—important elements that play a significant role in the structural integrity of post-frame buildings. These insights will undoubtedly enhance her expertise in future projects.

Reflecting on her experience, Alexa mentioned one aspect she would modify if given the opportunity to revisit the project: the windows in the great room area. She would opt to add more or make them larger to allow additional natural light to flood the space. This reflection demonstrates Alexa’s dedication to improving her work and her commitment to delivering designs that not only meet but exceed client expectations.

Alexa Ranfranz’s experience with the Bakke Cabin is a great example of the dedication, problem-solving skills, and teamwork that define Structural Buildings. Her journey through this project highlights the importance of collaboration, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. By combining these qualities, Alexa successfully brought the client’s vision for the Bakke Cabin to life, creating a beautiful and functional post-frame cabin that stands as a testament to her skill as a drafter.
